Small Heath Iftar Network
Community-organised open iftars across Small Heath, Sparkhill, and Bordesley Green throughout Ramadan. Rotating host families, mosques, and community centres feed neighbours, students, and anyone alone. Funded by small monthly donations and surplus from local Pakistani caterers. Volunteers needed for setup and cleanup.
Mother-Tongue Urdu School — Bordesley Green
Saturday Urdu school for Pakistani-heritage children aged 5–14 at a community hall in Bordesley Green. Reading, writing, and conversational Urdu with a curriculum designed for kids who only hear English at school. Volunteer teachers from local mosques and universities. Heavily subsidised — £2 per session.
Eid Clothing Swap — Handsworth
Pre-Eid clothing swap where families bring outgrown shalwar kameez, sherwanis, and kids' Eid outfits and take what they need. Held twice a year in Handsworth community centre. Everything free, everything dignified, no questions asked. Volunteers needed for sorting and steaming the day before.
Pakistani Tradesmen Co-op — Saltley
Informal co-op of Pakistani-Brummie tradesmen (plumbers, sparks, plasterers, builders) operating out of Saltley and Washwood Heath. Members share leads, group-buy materials, vouch for each other on insurance/CSCS, and run a free home-repairs day twice a year for widows and elderly community members.
Free CV Clinic for Recent Arrivals — Alum Rock
Weekly drop-in on Alum Rock Road helping recently-arrived Pakistanis translate their qualifications, write a UK-style CV, and prep for interviews. Volunteer mentors include teachers, NHS recruiters, and engineering managers from the Birmingham diaspora. Bilingual (Urdu/English/Mirpuri). Walk-ins welcome.
Pakistani Carers Respite Circle — Sparkbrook
Peer-support group for Pakistani Brummies caring full-time for elderly parents or disabled relatives. Monthly respite afternoons where trained volunteers sit with the person being cared for, freeing the carer for a few hours of rest, prayer, or just a walk. Includes WhatsApp burnout check-ins and signposting to NHS carer benefits.
